How to Set Up and Use a Medical Air Mattress

Lay the air mattress flat on top of the existing bed mattress, with the air tubes at the foot end. Hang the pump on the bed frame or place it on the floor, connect the two hoses, and switch on — it takes 15–20 minutes to inflate fully. Then set the pressure by the patient's weight: turn the dial down for a light patient and up for a heavy one. The hand test: slide your flat hand under the patient's hip; if you can feel the bed frame through the mattress, the pressure is too low. Put a thin cotton sheet over the mattress — never a thick foam or plastic sheet, which blocks the pressure change.
