What Is a CPAP Machine and Who Needs One in Bangladesh?

A CPAP machine — Continuous Positive Airway Pressure — treats obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition where the airway collapses repeatedly during sleep and breathing stops for short periods. The result is loud snoring, broken sleep, daytime exhaustion, morning headaches, and over years, real damage to heart health and blood pressure.

Sleep apnea is far more common in Bangladesh than most people realise, and most patients only find out after a partner complains about the snoring or a doctor orders a sleep study. The machine blows a steady stream of pressurised air through a mask worn over the nose or mouth, holding the airway open all night. It does not cure sleep apnea, but it controls it completely — most patients sleep properly within the first few nights.

You get the minimum pressure you need at any moment, which makes therapy far more comfortable — and it works well even when no in-lab titration was done. Fixed pressure CPAP

A fixed pressure CPAP delivers one pressure all night, set by your doctor from a titration study. It suits patients with a confirmed, stable pressure setting. Models in BD include the BMC RESmart G3 C20, Resvent iBreeze 20C and ResMed AirSense 10 and 11 Elite.

Travel CPAP

• A normal home IPS runs a CPAP all night. A 600–1000 VA IPS with a 100–150 Ah battery will comfortably run one CPAP machine for 8 hours with the humidifier switched off. If the IPS also runs fans and lights, turn the humidifier off during load-shedding — the machine itself keeps working.

The Mask Decides Whether Therapy Works

More patients in Bangladesh abandon CPAP therapy because of a leaking or painful mask than because of anything wrong with the machine. Nasal masks suit most patients, nasal pillows suit people with claustrophobia or glasses, and full face masks are for mouth breathers and high pressures. What a CPAP Machine Costs to Run Each Year

The machine is a one-time cost; the consumables are not, and most sellers never mention them. Budget for a mask cushion every 3–6 months and a complete mask every 6–12 months (BDT 5,000–18,500), a tube every 6–12 months (a ResMed heated tube is BDT 9,500), and air filters every month or two. In Dhaka's dust and humidity, lean towards the shorter intervals. Realistically that is BDT 12,000–25,000 a year for a ResMed setup and less for BMC — worth knowing before you compare machine prices alone.
