What Is a Patient Transfer Chair and How Does It Work?
A patient transfer chair (also called a patient lift chair or transfer wheelchair) has a split seat that opens into two halves and a frame that rolls under the bed. The carer slides the open chair under the lying patient, closes the seat halves beneath them, and raises the chair with a hydraulic pump, hand crank or lift mechanism. The patient is now seated and can be wheeled to the toilet, bathroom or another room without being lifted by hand. The seat has a commode opening, so the chair also works as a bedside toilet and a shower chair.
